The Story Of The Wilmington 10

Friends, I may not have anything to say that hasn't been said already, but I'm furious about the treatment of Ms. Sherrod. I'm furious at the right-wing media who manipulated her NAACP speech so that it appeared to say the opposite of what Ms. Sherrod really said, and furious that the Obama administration fell for that Faux News crap. I'm currently reading a history of SNCC, and am outraged that more people who should have known better didn't immediately recognize the name Sherrod and realize they needed to so some research before they acted.

The good news is that the correction to the story has received wide coverage, so we can hope this kind of idiocy won't happen again, and that the role of Fox News in disseminating slander has been exposed. Of course, we already knew that Fox thrives on peddling slander and racism. I hope that a few thousand people that didn't already know it are hearing the wake-up call.

This was written by my husband, and appeared in the Wilmington Star News on August 9, 2010. I was surprised to see it, but quite proud of him. Liz Hines

Stick it to Breitbart
Shirley Sherrod plans to sue right-wing blogger Andrew Breitbart, the liar who edited a video clip of a speech to make it mean the opposite of what she actually said. Breitbart was quoted saying, “I could care less about Shirley Sherrod.”
Well, I couldn’t care less about Andrew Breitbart. I hope she takes his website, his money, his house, his car, and his dog. …
Why did he think he could get away with it? He knew the whole video clip was out there and would eventually be discovered, utterly unmasking his purulent fraud. What does he think he accomplished other than the utter destruction, not of Shirley Sherrod, but of whatever credibility he ever claimed to possess?
The only person coming out of this mess with her head held high is the valiant and noble Sherrod. Shame on all the “base Republicans” and right-wing media slaverers who hysterically and gleefully piled onto her, and shame on the spineless, cringing Democrats in the administration, beginning with Agriculture Secretary Vilsack, who should resign so Sherrod can be given his job.
The base Republicans and Tea Partiers claim they aren’t racists. … I’ve heard it all before. …
