The Story Of The Wilmington 10
My mother Dolores Foy Moore was a direct descendant of a slave named Nathanial Foy, who was purchased on January 3 1857 by Joseph M. Foy, owner of Poplar Grove Plantation. Poplar Grove Plantation is located just outside of Wilmington on highway 17 near Scotts Hill. Poplar Grove was once one of the largest plantations in the area, covering over one hundred acres, from Market Street to Masonboro Sound.
While doing research for TRIUMPHANT WARRIORS at Poplar Grove , I stumbled across the original purchase agreement for my great, great grandfather, Nathaniel Foy, his mother Nancy and his brother Daniel. Below is a copy of the actual purchase of a human being.
